Memories of Chicano History
The Life and Narrative of Bert Corona
by Mario T. Garcia
With a Foreword by David Montgomery. Winner,1994 Southwest Book Awards given annually by the Border Regional Library Association. Based on an extensive three-year oral history project, this book represents a landmark publication in American history. The first autobiographical text by a major Chicano figure, it is also the first life history depicting the political experiences of Mexican-Americans. "García has distilled and polished hours of interviews with Corona into a readable, meditative blend of autobiography, labor chronicle, and Chicano history."

"Corona and Garcia have teamed up to narrate the Mexican-American struggle for economic and social justice. . . . More than a saga of a septuagenarian, the book is significant because it reveals the key role Hispanics have played in the mainstream labor movement. It also establishes the little-known but extensive Hispanic civil rights movement alive in the Southwest long before the marches in Mississippi and Mongomery."--Melita Marie Garza, Chicago Tribune

"Reading about Corona is also reading about a part of our own regional history, the part left out of textbooks."

"This book is highly recommended, not only as a tribute to one of the movers and shakers of the Chicano movement, but also as essential reading in U.S. labor and social history."--Choice

Mario T. García is Professor of History and Chicano Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the author of Mexican Americans: Leadership, Ideology, and Identity, 1930-1960 (1989). David Montgomery is Professor of History at Yale University.
